Did anyone get a copy of Muses vol. 1 at the last show?
FAA Muses will be printing off color copies tomorrow, so if you missed it or if you got a copy and liked it, be sure to keep an eye out for them around town this week and pick one up!
There’ll only be 15 first prints, get your hands on one!

We’ll make an announcement once they are available with a list of places they can be found. Stay tuned!

EDIT: For those who don’t know, Muses is a literary and visual arts zine put together by one of our amazing volunteers, Simon Hu (simxhu.tumblr.com).

It's National Volunteer Week

Yesterday marked the first day of National Volunteer Week, and as an organization that has survived solely through the work of volunteers for so many years, we understand the incredible value of an individual giving their time to a cause they believe in.

We’d like to thank everyone who has volunteered with us over the years, every person who’s taken money at the door for a show, who’s sat in the sound booth, who’s carried equipment, who’s put up posters, who’s set up an art installation, who’s glued together CD cases for a Scissors & Tape release, who’s manned the snack and merch tables, who’s ran the stage lights, who’s designed a flyer, who’s taught at a workshop, who’s managed a show, who’s told their friends and family about FAA and our mission, and anyone who has helped us over the years to further our goals of providing accessible arts programming and a means to increase youth-empowerment and youth-leadership in our community.

You have all made it possible for us to be where we are today, and will continue to be the force that allows us to grow and develop as we navigate 2013.

We’re always looking for youth (and adults too of course!) interested in volunteering with us. There are many opportunities suiting an array of different interests to choose from, and we aim to place all of our volunteers in a position where they can do the things they love or want to learn to do!

Getting involved is easy, just fill out the FAA Volunteer Form and we will get back to you within a few days so you can get started!

Hello all!
Today is April 7th, and the start of International Anti-Street Harassment Week!
Hollaback! Fredericksburg is hosting several events throughout the week to help raise awareness, kicking it off with a side-walk chalking event just outside of Market Square in downtown Fredericksburg today at 1pm.
Other events (Listed in the photo above) include:

An informational Hollaback! Meet-up at Hyperion Espresso on Wed. the 10th 6:30-8pm.
An anti-style-shaming photo campaign at Forage on Sat. the 13th 1-4pm.
A show in conjunction with Fredericksburg All Ages (us!) on the night of the 13th featuring Raw Feels, Cat Be Damned, and Joey DeMarco! 7-10pm at Eyeclopes Studios

Come out if you want to learn more about how and why street harassment and gender-based violence is a problem in Fredericksburg and what you can do about it! Or just come to hang out and show your support!

Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region awards FAA Duff Green grant of $6,240.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Fredericksburg All Ages (FAA) has been awarded a 2013 grant from the Duff McDuff Green, Jr. Fund. The Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region, which administers the grant fund, presented a check for $6,240 to FAA after reviewing the youth-oriented music and arts organization’s mission, goals and objectives. The funding will be used to establish a part-time, paid coordinator position in conjunction with the Rappahannock Area Office on Youth (RAOOY).

The Program Coordinator will greatly enhance FAA’s organizational capacity and ability to provide new programs and events that offer leadership and skill-building opportunities to local youth, and provide positive and proactive opportunities for young people in the Fredericksburg-area. The position will be the first paid position associated with FAA and will be administered through RAOOY.

For over six years, FAA has fostered a unique blend of youth leadership opportunities and participatory live music culture with a volunteer-only staff. The success of FAA in empowering youth leaders while providing safe, affordable and drug/alcohol-free outlets for youth-relevant entertainment has been noted by RAOOY as a model example of positive youth development. By partnering with FAA, RAOOY will enhance FAA’s work by providing in-kind fiscal and administrative support for the new position.

“We’re beyond excited to receive this funding,” said Brian Cameron, a 15-year-old sophomore at James Monroe High School who serves on FAA’s Board of Directors. “This grant from the Community Foundation and the Duff McDuff Green, Jr. Fund is going to be incredible in taking FAA to the next level as an organization. It’ll be huge as we expand our reach into the community and hopefully make a lasting impact in Fredericksburg.”

Fredericksburg All Ages is a youth-run and youth-led non-profit music and arts organization that fosters participation and community through musical performances, arts programs, hands-on learning and volunteer opportunities for all ages, especially youth.

“The Office on Youth is proud to be partnering with and supporting such an incredible group of individuals as FAA to implement this grant. FAA truly incorporates a youth development model for prevention that goes far beyond any other agency in the area, ” said Ben Nagle, the Executive Director of the Rappahannock Area Office on Youth. ”Youth are excited to be involved and work to lead the FAA efforts at all levels. It’s an amazing organization and we are glad to be working together.”

FAA creates a safe, alcohol-and-drug free environment where people of all ages and all backgrounds can experience music and art in a way that transcends commercial entertainment, invites participation and builds community. FAA participants not only get to see live music performances and enjoy art, they also have a chance to gain skills in various aspects of event planning, production and management. And, through the organization, young artists have a supportive community to perform their music and express themselves artistically.

Hollaback!Fburg’s 2013 Anti-Street Harassment Week Events:

Sunday, 4/7 (1pm)

What: Chalk Stenciling

Where: Market Square
Why: Chalking messages about Hollaback! Fburg and street harassment awareness on as much pavement as we can fit. Materials will be provided by people can BYOC too.

2. Wednesday, 4/10 (6:30-8pm)
What: Hollaback Hang
Where: Hyperion
Why: Raising awareness about street harassment through an informal group discussion. People can come together to share their experiences, trade bystander tactics and stay for as long or as short as they want.

3. Saturday, 4/13 (1-4pm)
What: Anti-Style Shaming Photo Campaign
Where: Forage (208 William Street)
Why: Clothing comes up a lot in the street harassment stories people post on Hollaback. But we have the right to not be ashamed of what we wear and we certainly have the right to not be objectified for rocking our own style. At Forage, come make a sign stating your right to wear what you want, try on some Forage clothes and we will take your photograph (faces excluded) to create Anti-Street Harassment/ Anti-Slut Shaming memes to share with our community. Craft materials, HollabackFburg literature, and snacks provided.

4. Saturday, 4/13 (7pm)
What: HollabackFburg/FAA Show
Where: Populuxe (107 William Street)
Featuring Raw Feels, Cat Be Damned, and Joey Demarco
Why: to melt face against street harassment!!!

Fredericksburg All Ages fully supports the efforts of Hollaback! Fburg. They are helping to make Fredericksburg safer place while educating people about gender-based violence and harassment, and the effects it has on individuals and our community.
